Flash Chromatography is one of the most effective methods used to achieve accurate, fast results in purifying cannabis and hemp extracts. There here are two modes of flash that can be utilized, normal-phase and reversed-phase.
Normal-phase uses a pure silica filled column and elution is with non-polar solvents such as hexane, heptane, and ethyl acetate. The second mode, reversed-phase, uses silica that has been bonded with hydrocarbons of varying lengths. Reverse phase elution is accomplished typically with a binary mixture of water and an organic solvent.
The choice of which mode is dependent on the directed goals of the purification or isolation.
- Normal phase provides an excellent first step general clean-up of terpenes and colored pigments.
- Reverse phase is best for isolation of THC, other minor cannabinoids, and pesticide remediation.
We recommend using both normal-phase and reverse-phase flash chromatography as a combined approach. Normal-phase provided an excellent clean-up of the product extract allowing the major isolated fractions to be further purified by reversed-phase. The result is a highly purified extract.
