Cyano Silica Gel
The Cyano group (CN) is a highly polar bond. It is as polar as Silanol groups (SI-OH). This means that bonded phases with a terminal Cyano group can be substituted for bare silica using the same chromatographic conditions.
Cyano Bonded Phase can also be used in Reversed Phase mode. However, since the number of carbons between the silica gel surface and the terminal cyano group is small, the retention is not as strong as C18 or C8. That is, Cyano Silica is the least reactive of the silica phases in Reversed Phase mode so the retention times are low, which means a shortening of separation times.
