Activated Alumina – TLC Grade
Primarily used for thin layer chromatography plate preparation. It is also useful as a packing media in pressurized chromatography columns.
It’s available in three surface modifications:
- Acidic
- Neutral
- Basic
The neutral grade is offered with or without gypsum (11% – as a binding agent).
In order to detect substances that do not have a chromophore, either use the alumina with UV254 indicator already added, or you can add a UV254 indicator (purchased separately).
The following classes of compounds have been separated on alumina thin layer plates:
- Alcohols
- Alkaloids
- Amines and amino acids
- Peptides and proteins
- Carbohydrates and carbonyl compounds
- Dyes and pigments
- Compounds with heterocyclic nitrogen
- Compounds with phosphorous and/or sulfur
- Hydrocarbons
- Pesticides
- Pharmaceuticals
- Sulfonates and stabilizers

Aluminum oxides for chromatography are manufactured from aluminum hydroxides by dehydration at temperatures between 400 and 500°C. The alumina that is suited for TLC requires BET surface to fall between 100 and 250 m2/g with a sufficiently large pore size (40-90 Å).
For coating substrates, the fine-grained oxide with a particle size below 0.06 mm is suspended with water to form a suspension of specific viscosity and spread onto the support. After drying in air, the layer is activated at 110°C. An aluminum oxide layer prepared as described above generally has a Brockmann activity between II to III.
Activity Grade | Alumina Oxide |
---|---|
I | – |
II | 3% |
III | 6% |
IV | 10% |
V | 15% |
We offer aluminum oxides for TLC with or without addition of gypsum and with or without fluorescent indicator. The pure aluminum oxides react basic (pH about 9.5). When gypsum is added as binder, the pH value of an aqueous suspension is decreased to almost neutral. This is important for separations which require basic layers.
